Fat Princess Review

The aim of the main match-type “Rescue the Princess” is to, as the name suggests, rescue the princess! The enemy team has your princess locked up and you need to break in to their castle and rescue her. Meanwhile, you need to stop the other team from doing the same. This may just sound like capture the flag, however, flags are light, easy to carry and not filled with cake!

This game is all about cake, hats and blood! You start as a hatless goon, however, as you put a hat on your big head things start to get fun! There are five hats and roles in total – Warrior, Ranger, Mage, Priest and Worker. Choose the Warrior hat for up-close stabby-stabbyness. If a long range gun/bow and arrow is up your street then throw on the Ranger hat. The Mage will allow you to throw fire or freeze people. The Priest can heal your team-mates and suck life from others, meanwhile the the worker can harvest resources to upgrade your fortress. The variety doesn’t end there! Each role can be upgraded, with an upgrade comes better, more powerful weapons and abilities. However, it is a shame that each role only has one upgrade. A good worker will have obtained enough resources quite quickly, therefore, making the role redundant after ten minutes or so.

Cake is can be found all over the place, according to the story it is magic cake that grows from the ground! You need to find this cake and feed it to her royal fatness. therefore, making it even harder for the enemy to carry your captive princess away! I know what you are thinking – Princesses, cake and rescue sounds like a bad Mario game. However, the battles that result from this combination are EPIC!

Although epic battles are common in Fat Princess, if the players do not work as a team and utilise all of the roles, matched can start to drag out. For example, if no-one takes on the role of a worker – who can build bridges, gates, catapults and ladders – then it quickly transforms into an endless death match with little purpose. There are other game modes that suffer from this problem, including, Smash & Grab, where you need to rescue the princess three times. Team Death match, however, encourages this behaviour, but adds a timer to the (cake) mix so that the matches do not last indefinitely.

Most of the time, however, everyone does work as a team, but you may find Fat Princess is best played with a group of friends that have a plan, as the team with the best team work and mix of classes will usually win!

The graphics of the game are simply stunning – the clean, bold cartoon art is made to look even better with 1080p support. My favourite part of “Fat Princess” is the humour! The cheeky phrases randomly uttered throughout a match reminds me of the days of “Worms”.

Fat Princess is one of the most addictive and satisfying games around and easily the best PSN game at the moment! I’m sure that as time goes on players will start to take better advantage of the roles. This combined with the unlimited potential for expansion, means that, as time goes on Fat Princess can only get better!

Add me “kivster” on PSN and play Fat Princess with me and let me know what you think!
